  • About the bank and the IT landscape

Public Joint Stock Company "BANK VOSTOK" has been operating in the Ukrainian market since 2011. Over the past 15 years, it has become one of the leading private banks in Ukraine, serving both individual and corporate clients. The bank actively invests in digital technologies, including mobile banking, analytics, automation, and cyber resilience. Its mission is to provide each client with simple, fast, and secure access to financial services.
Today, the bank's IT ecosystem is a complex network of interdependent services running across both cloud and on-premises environments. Core banking systems, CRM, digital channels, and security infrastructure all operate in real time, requiring transparency, consistency, and high performance. Together with Fozzy Group, the bank was recognized in the Best FinTech Ecosystem category at the Ukrainian Fintech Awards 2023, highlighting excellence in digital innovation.
This scale and complexity are the result of years of evolution—something Oleksandr Ryabchun, Head of Software Development at BANK VOSTOK, knows personally. Since joining the bank in 2013 as a system administrator, he has grown into a leadership role overseeing all areas of software development, including mobile solutions.

What prompted the implementation of Dynatrace?

Since 2013, the bank has actively developed its internal IT capabilities. Over the past decade, the development team has grown from 10 specialists to a full-fledged department with more than 100, and the scope of digital transformation has expanded far beyond the original goals. Today, the bank’s IT infrastructure includes over 1,300 microservices deployed across cloud and on-premises environments. In this new landscape, traditional monitoring tools became a bottleneck. The volume of incidents increased, root cause analysis became more challenging, and teams often operated with incomplete or fragmented data.

As our teams grew alongside the pace of change, IT services became critical to the customer experience, and that completely reshaped our approach to support.

Oleksandr Ryabchun, Head of Software Development at BANK VOSTOK

During digital transformation, BANK VOSTOK encountered challenges typical of rapid scaling: lack of centralized monitoring, limited visibility into the IT stack, and increased workload on development teams responsible for maintaining service uptime. Dynatrace emerged as a key solution, offering a single point of observability across the entire IT ecosystem. Implementation began over five years ago, back when the bank still operated with a monolithic architecture. The initial goal was to detect incidents in digital channels in real time. The team started by testing the platform on a single internal service, which quickly showed strong results. This success became the foundation for scaling Dynatrace across critical systems, including online banking, authentication, API services, and other components vital to daily operations.

We were looking for a platform that provided transparent monitoring without requiring a large support team. Dynatrace delivered exactly that, being critical for our environment.”

What key results have you achieved with Dynatrace?

Transparency and incident response

Dynatrace provides full-stack observability—from physical servers down to individual transactions, such as customer-to-customer money transfers. The average incident detection time has dropped from 30–60 minutes to just 5–10 minutes, enabling teams to respond before users are even aware of an issue. Automatic anomaly detection powered by Davis AI has become essential to root cause analysis. Dynatrace’s AI processes large volumes of data in real time to pinpoint issues with high accuracy, allowing teams to react quickly and minimize downtime. Before Dynatrace, alerts often came only after users called the support hotline, leading to disrupted service and costly downtime.

Example: Keycloak incident

One of the most illustrative examples is a Keycloak performance issue that affected all internal authorization services. Thanks to Dynatrace, we quickly detected that the database connection pool limit was exceeded. Automated analysis allowed us to localize the incident and resolve it within an hour, whereas without Dynatrace analytics, it could have taken several days.

Simplified management and team alignment

Dynatrace enabled centralized monitoring, eliminated the need for disparate tools, and clearly defined responsibilities across Dev, QA, and infrastructure teams. By consolidating observability into one platform, the bank reduced tooling complexity, lowered monitoring infrastructure costs, and freed up team capacity for innovation.

Thanks to managed zones, we have distributed responsibility — now only responsible teams receive notifications. All this has led to an improved customer experience, which is crucial for us, because customer trust is our main capital.

  • Optimization of infrastructure and costs

The BAKOTECH team helped the bank implement a project to migrate the Dynatrace monitoring system from an on-premises deployment to a cloud model (SaaS). This transition provided the bank with several strategic benefits:

Reduced IT team workload: Administrators no longer spend time updating Dynatrace clusters, as this is done automatically by platform engineers.
Infrastructure optimization: There is no longer a need to use data center resources to support Dynatrace, because the entire system now runs in the cloud.
Transparent and fast migration: The project was implemented in less than a month, including infrastructure preparation, configuration migration, and adaptation of Dynatrace components to the cloud environment.

Dynatrace helped to identify excessive resource consumption and inefficient configurations, reducing support costs. Through the Dynatrace Platform Subscription (DPS) model, the bank pays only for what it uses — ensuring cost predictability. As one of the region’s first DPS adopters, the bank gained both financial flexibility and operational control.

  • What are the long-term development plans for Dynatrace?

The bank plans to expand Dynatrace usage in AWS and Kubernetes (EKS) environments and deepen integration with CI/CD pipelines, CloudWatch, and other services to fully support its growing cloud ecosystem.

  • Conclusions and recommendations

The BANK VOSTOK case study illustrates how Dynatrace evolved from a monitoring tool into a full-scale performance management platform for a large financial institution. Its implementation has transformed the bank's approach to monitoring from reactive response to problems to proactive management, reduced costs, accelerated incident resolution, and made an important step in the Observability strategy.
The key factors behind the successful implementation of Dynatrace include not only the technological need but also the proactive attitude of the development manager, Oleksandr Riabchun, and his team. It was their strategic vision, technical expertise, and determination in digital transformation that became the catalyst for change. Oleksandr supported the idea of implementing the new platform and personally led the process of testing, assessing capabilities, and scaling. Thanks to a systematic approach, perseverance, and well-coordinated teamwork, the bank went through the transformation process confidently and efficiently; without these factors, the implementation would have been much more difficult or even impossible.

Our experience has shown that it is best to start with a small but critical segment, such as microservices or cloud services. Invest in integration with DevOps processes, involve teams from all levels, and build a digital culture around Dynatrace.
